The Case of the Mystery Bone is a 3 - 5 week unit of work in which students take on the role of forensic detectives as they determine the identity of the person to whom the bone belongs.
As their ultimate conclusions must be justified mathematically, students engage in a number of practical and theoretical activities which involve them in experiences in:
- measurement, data collection and analysis,
- calculation involving a variety of number representations
- ratio and proportion and
- co-operative problem solving.
These real-life applications of mathematics provide students with both a context and significance for their learning.
