Resources

Here are just some of the resources that we have found useful so far.

Quia

Quia is a website where you can create your own activities or use or modify literally thousands of other activities of other teachers. These activities can include "Who wants to be a millionaire" style rags to riches, jeopardy, hangman, and multiple-choice. As well as saving many quizzes to our Moodle page Debbie was able to create her own web page in Quia where she has saved some useful resources. They are listed here for you as well.

How to access Quia:

You may need a password to access the resources on this site. Click on the link below and click on Instructor Zone.

http://www.quia.com/

From this page you may be able to go directly into a number of subject areas, e.g. Mathematics. Once in Mathematics you can search for activities by topic.

If it doesn’t let you access the activities, from this page you can sign up for a free 30-day trial or arrange for a subscription to the site.

Learning Federation’s learning objects:

Measurement

Area of triangles: triangles with a right angle

Area of triangles: triangles without vertical or horizontal sides

Area of triangles: height intersects with the base inside the triangle

Area of triangles: height intersects with the base outside the triangle

These five activities have a progression in difficulty. Find the area of right-angled triangles. Explore how the formula works. First, estimate the area of a chosen triangle on a grid. Next, work out the correct formula by assembling a series of triangles and rectangles. Then, compare the actual area of the triangle with your original estimate. Practise applying the formula directly to a range of right-angled triangles.

Algebra

Bridge builder: triangles 1

Bridge builder: triangles 2

Bridge builder: quadrilaterals

Bridge builder: complex squares

Bridge builder: complex pentagons

These five activities have a progression in difficulty. They feature a truck that has to deliver sections to build a bridge. Students had to identify the pattern that linked the number of beams required to the number of sections to be built. The learning object then goes on to plot a graph and the students have to find the equation of the linear relationship.

Algebra Balance Scales — This is extremely useful for students to learn how to solve equations but only has equations with positive quantities.

Algebra Balance Scales - Negatives - This was useful in the next lesson for students to learn how to solve equations which can also have negative quantities. There were a couple of limitations in that it only allows up to 10 of each pronumeral or number and sometimes didn’t work perfectly but with teacher assistance it helped girls to understand the concept.

National Library of Virtual Manipulatives

These two objects can also be found on the National Library of Virtual Manipulatives website:

Type in Math as a search and lots of resources appear.

It does not require a password but access to the learning objects can be slow. Through the Learning Federation we were able to download the learning objects so they could be used from our school moodle site which worked a lot faster.

Mathletics:

Mathletics provides topic-by-topic excellent revision questions as well as support for students to be re-taught particular concepts. It is highly motivating as it provides rewards to the students for increasing levels of participation in activities. It also has a highly motivating Live Mathletics section where they can compete in basic mental arithmetic against students all over Australia and even a few world-wide. It has been tailored specifically to the relevant Year group Australian syllabus. They have provided 24 hour access to the site for all students at the school for a fee of $30 per student for the year.

Area and Perimeter activity

http://www.bgfl.org/bgfl/custom/resources_ftp/client_ftp/ks2/maths/perimeter_and_area/index.html

This was okay, nice and colourful and big but not set out in the best way and has no place for working, quickly jumps to hard questions…
